Connaught Schools Chess Finals 2024

Students from St Clare’s Comprehensive School took part in the Connaught Schools Chess Competition on Wednesday the 20th of March in the Aurdilaun Hotel,

Taylors Hill, Galway. Over 14 schools, 300 students from all corners of Connaught took part in the event.

Our A Team won 3rd place in the shield section. Eoghan Rooney came home with the Star player award as he went undefeated. Our A team consisted of Kurt Venusa, Luuk Akkermans, Karl Venusa, Bilal Asif, Ruby Akkermans, Bao Luong, Micheal Byrne and Eoghan Rooney. The B team still won most of their games but unfortunately didn’t come back with any awards. The B team consisted of Corey Reilly, Jakub Lesniak, Oscar Croker, Conor O’Mahony, Killian Jenkins, Donnacha Herron and Caydn Maguire. Our students showed great skills  while participating in This chess competition. Well done.

This event is not just about competing, there is also a social side. St Clare’s Comprehensive School students met and played against other boys and girls from different schools who all had an interest in chess. Students also learned new chess moves to bring into their games.

Well done everyone, keep practising! Thanks to Ms Benson for organising.
