The students in 2C were delighted to welcome Marian Harkin T.D. to the school on Tuesday during the Mock General Election. Minister Harkin spoke to the students about her career in politics. She took time out of her busy schedule to explain how the PR-STV voting system works.
Students in 2C and Ms. Carden counted the ballot papers using proportional representation with a single transferable vote (PR–STV, or PR for short). Thank you to all of the teachers and SNAs who accompanied students to the polling station and the C.S.P.E. teachers who delivered lessons on democracy in advance of the election. It was an enjoyable day.
The results were as follows: Marian Harkin (IND) topped the poll on the first count with 22% of the first preference votes, Martin Kenny (SF) was elected on the 6th count (first preference 18%), Frank Feighan (FG) was elected on the 8th count (first preference 7.8%) and Nessa Cosgrove (Labour) was elected on the 9th count (first preference 7.6%).
