Some 55 people received awards from Water Safety Ireland in recognition of the roles they played in saving 29 lives in 24 near drowning incidents at an award ceremony at Dublin Castle on Tuesday the 14th of November.
“We are recognising true heroes, we have wonderful examples of individual work, teamwork, we also have members from the public, members of the gardaí,” Water Safety Ireland CEO Joanne Walsh said.
Among the prize winners were two of our 6th year students Darragh Flanagan and Donnacha Maguire. In June this year Darragh and Donnacha were on the rocks at a beach in Bundoran when they heard a cry for help. They immediately assessed the situation, entered the water and swam towards the scene to discover the person was unresponsive. Using the cross chest technique they brought the casualty to safety where an off duty nurse and fireman performed CPR while the emergency services arrived. The casualty made a full recovery. Both boys are members of Blacklion Water Safety.
